Cristobel Balenciaga will always be renowned for being the protagonist of the couturier world. His creative brilliance radically altered the traditional silhouette through the fluidity of designs and his ultra-modern shapes that also enabled manipulation between his clothing and the women’s body.
Christian Dior famously referred to him as ‘the master of us all’, inevitably; he was also heavily respected throughout the fashion world for his knowledge of technique, construction and perfectionism. Today we remember such a legacy through the means the creator cemented his brand; as a staple fashion house that forecasted and continues to predict, pret-a-porter for years to come.
In 2015, Demna Gvasalia become the creative director of Balenciaga, originally the founder of the label Vetements, Gvasalia has openly admitted his infatuation with the history of such a chronological organisation. Undeniably, the lines may have been slightly blurred through his approach to high fashion and streetwear, but you can still witness pockets of Cristobel’s original designs. However, Gvasalia is adamant that his creations cannot be on-point replicas from the 1950s, as this would not work in today’s manner. How very true.
I suppose you could say that the current creative director is the complete opposite to the founder. For Balenciaga was not a showman, in fact, he would never appear publicly and discuss his work, he was a shy man who just wanted to get on with his constructions. Clearly, times have changed, especially since the world of social media, and Gvasalia’s avant-garde personality would certainly clash with the original master. However, nowadays the industry (along with big designer brands) are searching for these brash creatives who will not only bring fresh blood into companies, but also their strong, gregarious personalities.
Nonetheless, Gvasalia understands and admires the legacy, and he does honour his work through a variety of design techniques.
Admittedly, the kind of dresses made by the master will probably never be made again – and perhaps they are even a testament to everything fashion should be, but regrettably, we have to move on. Still, the work of Balenciaga has created a lasting impression on the industry and a past that we will be forever honoured, recalled and referenced by from many sources.
