The Trainer Game
Posted in Trend Alert
I attended a friends wedding some 7 years ago, where the groom and best man were admirably suited as expected, only on their feet were the latest Nike limited addition sneakers. They looked dapper and incredibly cool, and I loved the fact that something so casual was also convincingly apt for such a significant day.
Forward to 2019, and to witness such a spectacle is no longer a novelty, for not only are we donning the leather slipper to special occasions, we are showcasing it on a daily basis to work, with our summer outfits, and nobody fluffs their fashion-feathers in disrespect. Nevertheless, what is so different from 7 years ago is the vastness and development that trainers have achieved. Obviously, the chunky soles of the 90s and the colour blocking of the early 00s surround us, but if you look closely, you will notice the huge progress in the actual texture. Technology in 2019 has no boundaries, and this seems to be continuous, so do not be surprised if the sneaker trend becomes more characterful and titled.
Another favourite for this season seamlessly falls on the other end of the spectrum. Instead of going bold, chunky and distinctive, how about keeping things clean, white and crisp. The designer who showcased such a notion the most last autumn, was no other than Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton; his creations of such ilk certainly proved their simple yet effective vibe on the runway.
As celebs jump on the trainer bandwagon, it is yet further proof of the trends solidarity. Victoria Beckham’s recent endorsement for Reebok has proved its worth through its mixture of performance and on-trend streetwear. To think that 10 years ago when the likes of Kanye West was pictured donning trainers at fashion week, and almost ridiculed about his choice of footwear. Ironically, his response was swift and to the point ‘watch this space’, he remarked.
We are all aware of the global phenomenon that the athleisure-wear trend has created, with trainers being the protagonist of such a fashion sensation. The levels that it has reached today are a constant reminder of the spectacle it first created back in the 1980s. However, only this time in 2019, there is the added respect that comes with it, an almost acceptance to such a casual-wear. Poignantly, a few seasons ago, there was talk of certain fashionistas becoming bored of these prominent informal vibes, and preference to classic cuts and killer heels were appearing. Nevertheless, instead of the trend waning, it has crept into luxury-wear and created a brand new persona. As Mr West once quoted, ‘watch this space’; how right he was.
